Match Summary

In a battle of two programs that can boast extremely proud traditions in the fifteen-a-side game, Air Force took on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. The Irish threatened first but Air Force held strong. With the ensuing possession, Air Force took the initial 5–0 lead thanks to a try by Alex Goirigolzarri in the right corner. He was unable to convert his score, keeping Notre Dame very much in the matchup. A cracking run by Notre Dame’s Connor Grace and support by Lucas Smart, sent Smart in for the first ND score. Dan Conmy’s conversion gave Notre Dame a momentary lead. But the restart proved advantageous for Air Force as Austin Lyons crosses for the score to make it 10–7 in the Academy’s favor. A penalty on the stroke of halftime saw Air Force threaten. A turnover gave Notre Dame a potential counter attack, but a questionable choice to kick behind the defense by Conmy saw the ball roll to touch and end Notre Dame’s chance of regaining the lead before halftime.

Tyler Vaught extended Air Force’s lead to 15–7 with a try under the post. Goirigolzarri’s conversion attempt caught the bottom of the crossbar, leaving it a mere eight-point lead. Air Force’s Nick Waterman salted it away with a try under the post. Goirigolzarri’s conversion made it 22–7 with a minute remaining. Just thirty seconds later, AFA #11 Vaught was in for his second try of the half to make it 27–7 with just enough time for a restart. The final restart yielded o change in the scoreline: Air Force 27, UND 7.
