Drexel Women vs Temple Women - Collegiate Rugby Championship

With the women’s competition having completed pool play on Friday, Saturday began with the first women’s challenge trophy quarterfinal pitting Temple against Drexel. The Dragons started with a great early attack and kept the Owls under pressure for the first several minutes of play. An ill-advised kick from hand by Temple from inside its own twenty-two, which was easily taken by the Drexel sweeper nearly yielded the first points of the match. A knock on from Drexel gave Temple a reprieve. But again, Temple chose to kick to the Drexel sweeper instead of backing its own offensive efforts. A penalty soon followed and Drexel’s first points were moments away. With the try coming in the left corner, the missed conversion left the Dragons just five points in front. That lead grew to twelve when Sanie Auguste carved up the Temple defense for a try under the sticks. Ilana Granow’s conversion capped the effort. The ensuing restart finally gave Temple a shot at prolonged possession, but the half came to an abrupt end when a handling error for the Owls resulted in a knock on at the Temple twenty-two.

The second half began with another virtuoso display from Auguste, who again darted past the Owls for a try under the post. Granow’s second successful conversion pushed Drexel ahead 19–0. For the next four minutes, the Dragons struggled to extend the lead but had little difficulty keeping the Owls from getting back into the match. As the final match got under way, Kaitlyn Moran’s try in the right corner cemented fate as winner of the match, leading 24–0 just before the hooter. An error on the restart put the ball in the hands of Temple for a shot at consolation points. Stiff defense and a determination to keep the fellow Philadelphians off the board saw Moran make it a brace of tries to give Drexel the final points of the contest. On full time, it was Drexel 29, Temple 0.
