Iona vs Kutztown - Collegiate Rugby Championship

Match Summary

Dmontae Noble turned on the jets to give the Golden Bears the lead, and Jackson Clark added the conversion from in front of the upright. John D’Allara scored five for Iona, with Santi Mascolo’s conversion making it seven all a quarter of the way into the match. Iona took the least two minutes later when Mascolo carried an offload under the posts. He converted his own score to make it 14–7 Iona.

The end of the half would be hard to script. Iona looked trapped on the wing, but then managed to sloppily pass openings in the Kutztown defense, eventually using a great dummy to gain ten meters. But an offload directly to a Golden Bear gave the possession away, only to then see it come back to Iona. After a breathtaking forty seconds of action, Iona kicked to touch to go into the huddle with the lead.

Connor Buckley added another Iona try in the second half to not only increase hopes of a victory but draw closer to a chance to secure the 7th or 8th seed in the quarterfinal. Kutztown continued to battle, answering with a try by Jason DeNofa and solid conversion from Jackson Clark. Then, from the restart, Ryan Nolan tore down the right touchline into the Iona goal. Although Nolan did not get the plant, Mascolo’s high tackle meant a penalty try and yellow card to Mascolo. The penalty try gave Kutztown a 21–19 lead in the final two minutes, with Iona playing down a man. Still, the magic feet of John Powers had Iona back in the lead (26–21) with fifty seconds remaining.

Iona held on to win and secured Kutztown’s exclusion from the quarterfinal and may have booked a place for itself.
