Penn State vs St. Joseph's - Collegiate Rugby Championship

The Nittany Lions of Penn State squeaked out a win over the St. Joseph’s Hawks by a score of 24-21 in probably the most thrilling match of the day thus far. Neither team could gain much of an edge in the early minutes. Penn State held the ball for longer, but could never break the try line. That was all before Dan Deal broke free for St. Joe’s and fed James Wolfer for the first try of the game, plus a conversion. Thomas Cuddihy tacked on another try late in the frame, plus another conversion, to go up 14-0. Penn State pressed hard to end the half, and they eventually found paydirt as Ryan McNulty got across the try line to get on the board. The score was 14-5 in favor of the Hawks at the half. They didn’t stop there, as Mike Eife worked his way through most of the St. Joe’s players for a beautiful try (plus conversion) to pull within two points in the second half. However, St. Joe’s had their own crafty play up their sleeve. Greg McTiernan knifed through multiple defenders, and despite being tackled, made a beautiful pass to Deal who waltzed in for his second try of the game. Eife responded again with his second try of the game, once again careening through multiple defenders to pull within two with 20 seconds to play. The Nittany Lions desperately pressed with no time left on the clock, and Mikell Washington scored the match-winning try to the left of the goalpost.
