Rowan vs Villanova - Collegiate Rugby Championship

Freedom Cup Semifinal 1, Rowan v. Villanova: The Wildcats were first on the board with a try in the right corner by James Lyons at the midway point of the first half. Rowan answered quickly with a blistering try from Matt Rhodes. Hunter Musson’s conversion moved Rowan in front. Patrick Maher’s breakaway score under the goalpost and conversion put Villanova back into the lead.
The second half started with Rowan on the wrong side of a couple early penalties, one of which sent Armani Mendez to the sin bin. The disadvantage did not hold Rowan back thanks to Mike Ottino’s interception and try under the post. Musson’s conversion gave Rowan the two-point advantage. Just as Rowan was set to return to seven men, a dangerous tackle from Rhodes resulted in the second yellow card of the match, leaving Rowan down a player for two more minutes. Nevertheless, Rowan again managed a short-handed try, this time coming from Conner Weatherby. Musson could not connect on the conversion from the right touchline, making it just a one-score contest. Jack Ragnoni cut into Rowan’s lead with a hard charge down the right touchline and Aidan Rockwood’s conversion squared it up at 19–19. As the bell rang out, Villanova earned a penalty at the Rowan twenty-two and looked to secure the final points and the win. A dropped pass at the twenty-two gave Rowan the ball and soon saw Weatherby streaking down the pitch for the match winner. Mendez’s conversion set the final line: Rowan 26, Villanova 19.
