U. of California vs Arkansas State - Collegiate Rugby Championship

The defending champions Cal Golden Bears kept their title defense hopes alive with a 24-14 over Arkansas State. The Red Wolves put Cal on edge in the opening minutes, scoring two quick tries. After some midfield back-and-forth, Sione Fangaiuha broke through and scored under the goal posts. Off the ensuing kick, Arkansas State controlled it and made some nice moves to send Connor Cook over the line in the corner. The tough conversion was successful, giving the Red Wolves a 14-0 lead at half. That was when Cal got back to form, as Anthony Salaber found space in a two-on-one situation and scored. At the halftime horn, the Red Wolves left Cal too much space in the corner, and Jesse Milne easily scampered over, and two conversions tied things up at 14. The start of the second half was very back-and-forth, with Cal putting on most of the pressure. They found their way over and into a five-point lead about midway through the half when Russell Webb took a ball out of a scrum and put on the jets to score. The Red Wolves had some great plays to counter, until an errant pass went right into the hands of a Cal defender. They kept it up, but a kick ahead went too far, and the speed of Cal upfield was too much for the Red Wolves, and Fawzi Kawash put the icing on the cake for the Golden Bears.
