UCLA - Collegiate Rugby Championship

Since 1934, UCLA Rugby has competed against the best Universities, Clubs and International Teams in the rugby world. James Schaeffer introduced the original team which was revived post-WWII through the efforts of Norm Padgett‰’s hustling and fraternity walks. Padgett‰’s former Captain, Ged Gardner, assumed the Coaching role from 1958-65 and built membership, interest and skill to which Coach Dennis Storer added his own unique style. These developments confirmed that UCLA possessed winning potential and they subsequently earned 3 Monterey Titles, 17 So. Cal Championships and produced 14 US Eagles, with Storer himself becoming the first ever USA Eagle Coach. Unfortunately, the enactment of Title IX eventually led to the designation of Men‰’s Rugby as a Club Sport in 1982. The years following witnessed some difficult results, but the program continued to produce men of character at a constant and consistent level. Sensing growth in the domestic game and more permanent leadership demands, a dedicated Alumni group headed by Coach Storer, launched an effort to return Bruin Rugby to its former prowess. This resulted in the hiring of our current Head Coach Scott Stewart, a Canadian International with 64 caps and 5 World Cup appearances. Since that time, the Bruins have progressed rapidly and have continued to improve their record each year. 2010 saw the team earn their first appearance in the National Playoffs in 28 years. 2012 was even more successful in establishing the Bruins as an elite program on the national scene as they earned a spot in the D1-A 1/4 finals, showing well in a first-round loss to eventual national champion Brigham Young. The 2012-2013 campaign has started off well for the Bruins, who spent the fall focusing on establishing their name in the 7‰’s game. This effort concluded with the PAC Sevens Tournament, a highly competitive event hosted by the Bruins and attended by every PAC-12 team. The Bruins earned a third-place performance behind Utah and eventual champions California and are now delighted to have been invited to the Collegiate Rugby Championship 7‰’s Tournament in June, the premier event in US Collegiate Rugby.
